Getting the Most from your CareCo Mobility Scooter Battery

July 04, 2017 -
Mobility Scooter protection

As with a car, your mobility scooter needs essential maintenance and even repairs from time to time. One of the most important elements of the vehicle and one that people forget is to take care of the battery. It’s electric powered, so you need to get the most out of your mobility scooter battery as possible. Treat it with care and you’ll have a productive life for the battery. You will need to replace it eventually; until you do, here is how to get the most out of it.

Charge the Batteries for First Use to Manufacturer Instructions

Your battery may have a full charge before accepting delivery of your vehicle so that you can use it straight away. However, we recommend erring on the side of caution and recommend a good charge before the first use as per the instructions in the manual. Charge at the end of each day and leave it charging until the process has finished. Your CareCo mobility scooter battery will receive the maximum benefit for keeping it on charge. Also, if you are on an energy plan where your overnight electricity costs are lower, you can save money this way even if you charge it every night.

If Your CareCo Mobility Scooter Battery is “Deep Cycle”

This is a specific type of battery used in a variety of applications. One of the most common is in mobility scooters. You will receive specific instructions on the proper care of this type of battery. Namely, that the more use it gets, the more you choose it, the longer its life will be. To take a random figure, your deep cycle CareCo mobility scooter battery might initially have a range of 15 miles. After around 20 charges, the distance may be closer to 30 miles. The chemicals used in the manufacture of this type of battery will become more active and efficient over time. It’s important to let this type fully discharge before fully charging it again.

Remove Unnecessary Weight Each Journey

Your battery will last longer and need fewer charges each week if you remove unnecessary weight whenever you go out. As with a car, take only that which you need on a journey. A warranty is typically 12 months. With good care and fewer charges, you may find that your CareCo mobility scooter battery could last closer to 18 months, maybe even 2 years in some cases with extra care. It all depends on how often you take heavier loads and what you do to minimise the impact on the battery.

Don’t Allow Batteries to Run Completely Flat

Running any battery to the point where it is completely flat will damage its efficiency, reducing the life of your CareCo mobility scooter battery. This is especially true for mobility supplies. Keeping it fully charged ensures you won’t be caught short while out and about and gives you the peace of mind that the vehicle will be in full working order. The manufacturer instructions should explain how low you should allow it to run, but 10% tends to be typical. If you’re at home and it’s under 20%, you should certainly charge it again before you go out. Buy a good quality battery charger for best performance.

Every Few Months

Every two or three months you should allow the battery to charge to near zero (but never completely flat), around 5% should be enough. Then you should fully charge it to 100%. This will reset the monitor to ensure it gives you as accurate a reading as possible. Charge level monitors do tend to slip over time, a bit like a watch, and resetting the indicator is a way of restoring accuracy – a bit like phoning the speaking clock to ensure your watch shows the right time.
