Wheelchairs For Young People - Help Your Kids Be More Active

August 28, 2014 -

Chelsey Jay - Models of Diversity It may seem sometimes that wheelchairs are only aimed at the older generations with nothing to suit the practicalities of life for young people. Wheelchair users are both young and old, either growing up having used a wheelchair all their lives or who have suffered an injury or illness that has put them into a wheelchair later in their childhood or teenage years.

But at CareCo, we understand that there are children and young adults everywhere needing wheelchairs to suit their lifestyles, whether they need full support with wheelchairs that can be easily manoeuvred by the carer or lightweight frames to get themselves around more easily and independently.

One of the most important priorities for a young person in a wheelchair is finding a way to be independent and not have to rely on somebody assisting them in everything they do. Being able to get from point A to point B without someone helping when you’re in a wheelchair can seem like a big challenge. At CareCo we have a wide range of wheelchairs designed specifically to suit young people who might be just learning to use a self-propelled wheelchair or may have been in a wheelchair all their lives.

Wheelchairs for School and College

Self-propelled wheelchairs are especially popular with young people heading off to school, college or work alone for the first time. You usually want to feel that there are no constraints or limits on what you can do or where you can go simply because you’re in a wheelchair. Having the power to get around under your own steam can help improve confidence in your abilities in other areas of your life too. You don’t need to miss out on anything or feel constrained simply because you’re in a wheelchair.

Our large range of wheelchairs are all designed to aid your mobility, we are sure to have something to help you join in with everyone else. If you’re looking for a lightweight and comfortable wheelchair that you can easily forget you’re using, or something to give you a bit more speed when playing with your mates, a sport wheelchair with adjustable wheels, arm and leg rests might be for you.

Wheelchairs For Play and Sports

Active Sports in a Wheelchair

A wheelchair shouldn’t stop you from participating in sports with your friends or getting around your environment, whether that means taking public transport on a daily basis or simply getting around your home; sturdy but manoeuvrable wheels in many of our models will enable you to take part and get around without a second thought. If the size of a wheelchair is a concern for you since they all seem to be designed for the adult frame, it needn’t be any longer. You’ll be able to sit comfortably in the chair without any worries; some are even adjustable so that as you continue to grow, the wheelchair can change with you, meaning there’s no need to get a new one every year.

Wheelchairs with Comfort and Support

If support and comfort is a priority for you as a young person in a wheelchair, CareCo have wheelchairs that have padded armrests as well as gel wheelchair cushions which can help to provide support, improve posture and prevent pressure sores. For full time use wheelchairs, we also have models which provide maximum comfort with padded adjustable headrests, leg rests that can be elevated to provide more support and seat tilting features, as well as ones which are easy for carers to push or you to use on your own. Whatever needs you have as a young person requiring a wheelchair, CareCo will be able to advise what might be best for you whether you’re looking for independence, support, comfort or a combination of everything.
